: The buckle frame has two centrally positioned cross-hatched knops. The frame is lyre-shaped and has a series of grooves down the sides. The bar has a groove to accomodate a pin which is not present. Minute traces of gilding are seen under magnification.

Notes: Buckle with large stone setting on the tongue. Tongue is complete and moves freely. It has a raised bezel for a stone and a small triangular point. Stone is absent. Traces of gilding exist. The body of the buckle is undecorated with two grooves at the back which houses the buckle plate bar which are both absent.

Similar to: PAS database item HAMP2980. Described as "The buckle frame is recessed for the cast copper-alloy pin which is circular with a pointed extension which rests on the outer edge of the frame. The circular element of the pin has a circular recess at the centre, which may originally have held a setting, now missing. Traces of thick gilding survive on all surfaces of the frame and pin and on the upper surface of the plate. Red/brown patina. This is an example of a disc-on-pin buckle, whose use is uncertain as the disc would prevent the pin passing through the hole in the strap.

Similar to: Portible Antiquities Scheme Register Record ID: CORN-B008ED. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar trapezoidal buckle with grooves on p.84, no.524 which is dated from c.1620-1680.

Similar to: Flynn and Geake (2018) in the new Finds Recording Guide for Buckles illustrate an almost identical buckle on page 48, second row, centre, dating from the 17th century.
