Beehive thimble
with tiny dimples

Object: Thimble.
Culture: Medieval. 14th century
Country/Area of Origin: England. UK.

Notes: This thimble has very small dimples, suggesting that the needle used with is was extremely thin and light weight. The large diameter suggests that it was used by a man as even worn on a woman's thumb, the thimble is loose. Statutes at the end of the 13th century lists 94 embroiderers in Paris, 15 of whom were men. This type of thimble would have been suitable for this use.
